A Textural Dream
These new colorful and reversible totes are just the thing to give you Spring Fever without even packing away the winter gear. These handmade market bags are a super colorful collection of eclectic upholstery fabrics that scream…”please don’t leave me at home!” Because I sometimes struggle making things that are non-reversible these tote bags are beautiful on both sides giving you not just one awesome bag, but two!

While I LOVE making your awesome handmade hats this new line of spring bags for 2021 has been a welcome change not only visually but also texturally.

Scrappy Sustainability
As you know I love to hear from my people about new ideas and ways to do things so in the midst of my social media viral video I was prompted to think about all the scraps that lay on my kitchen floor after two days of cutting my bag fabric patterns. Giving some of these fabric scraps a home, other than my trash, got me excited to use them in some of the designs of the new handmade totes. Keeping these market totes creative, unique, fresh and timeless stays true with the sustainability of handmade and the theme of bound to be creative!

Tote-ally Handmade

Who doesn’t need a quick and easy tote to lug items from the car to the house? These handmade totes are made with the natural stiffness of upholstery fabric, giving them weight and a beefy, but beautiful, attitude. While dreamy to sew they are even dreamier to hold your local fresh market goods, library books and perhaps even fill your game day goods for pickleball!

Your brisk morning walk just got an upgrade and you can start to show your true colors!

In between distance learning with the kids, virtual work meetings and baking it may be tough to get outdoors and breath in the fresh air.  Getting outside clears the head, refreshes the soul and jumpstarts the day.  While I shirk on the everyday walker chart finding any time of the day is good to get out and take in the landscape…even if it’s not that pretty of a view. (heck, anything is pretty outside my house right now because I’m living with seven people).

SHOW YOUR TRUE COLORS WITH A WINTER FLEECE HAT

THANK YOU TO ALL MY NEW SUBSCRIBERS!!
YOU ROCK MY SOCKS!

women's winter fleece hat

So much inspiration from my readers drove these fun and colorful best selling fleece style hats! It drove me right to making them in the midst of the busy hat season without even a whisper to anyone…except maybe my mom.

SHOW YOUR TRUE COLORS!

When someone shows you their true colors, don’t try to paint a different picture.

– Someone T. Cool

Why show my colors?
Because you my friend, have a beautiful side to share with others. I know it can be scary, unnatural, nerve-racking and quite simply the scariest thing you’ve ever done. But showing your true colors is liberating, invigorating and a step towards being the person you were created to be. During a pandemic we maybe tend to feel more reserved or closed in – makes perfect sense. Taking baby steps towards showing your true side takes a leap of faith.

True Colors isn’t always pretty…or is it?
Showing our “true colors” can be a positive thing. It’s the graduation towards #sorrynotsorry (yes, that hashtag is like a decade old but #sorrynotsorry). Call it my upper 40’s but showing who I am took courage and it didn’t happen overnight. It was a series of little things that felt uncomfortable for a bit, but then got easier to accept. I encourage you to embrace who you are and not apologize for it!

Keep things upbeat and add a little salt ‘n’ peppa to your winter wardrobe….a snappy fleece hat for women!

Are you one that needs to step out of her hat box and spice things up just a tiny bit but you don’t know where to start? I’ve got your head covered along with your ears. Let’s take a look at a great starter hat. The winter earmuff fleece hat for women comes in a variety of colors. Click the button and let’s shop!

Have you ever felt a little rough around the edges or a slight bit edgy – okay a lot bit edgy? Raise your hand if this fits for you (by the looks of the virtual hand-raising you’re not alone). Read on to see my new adventures and how Upcycling through Handmade stitches new life with frayed edges and threads. Find out how you can tackle your “‘maybe someday” project, too.

Rough Around the Edges…literally
Allowing for a bit of self reflection on what was, is and what will be has been things as of late. Not only do we need to do a self-check every now and then but also self-reflect. We’re not perfect and life is not perfect. As a result we can maybe finally accept ourselves flaws and all. Moreover letting go of things that we can control vs. the things we can’t is what makes us well rounded and acceptable to ourselves and others. The future is somewhat unknown and all I know is the now and thank goodness God takes care of the rest.

Resurface. Reupholster. Repaint. Refinish. Make something old new again!

Leaving CraftRoom for Error
When it comes to perfection and handmade the creative juices can halt and even stifle creativity. Moreover, erring on the side of creative caution can fill a room full of “maybe someday” projects. Do you have “maybe someday” projects lurking in your closet, a cabinet or perhaps under your bed? I most certainly do and somehow the far right brain finally cleared the dusty cobwebs and the big reveal happened.

That project is taking old t-shirts (& sweatshirts) under the scissors and cutting them up and creatively assembling them with other retired shirts and making t-shirt dresses.

Upcycling through Handmade

Bound to be Creative dresses with upcycled t-shirts
A pile of new, retired and wannabe comfortable t-shirts lurked in my closet shelf and they got hacked and re-fashioned into a dress!

While taking on this project it stretched the creative brain beyond measure.

Upcycling through Handmade

Bound to be Creative dresses with upcycled t-shirts

Let’s tackle that someday project!

But I don’t know where to begin!
Taking on a “maybe someday” project can be daunting and scary, especially if we’re used to the same ol’ grind of our routine. Breaking out of a routine to give ourselves a brain break is a good thing! Whether it’s a monumental project of a simple project here’s a list of things to get you started and not let it go any longer.

  • write it down – somehow it becomes more “real” when it’s etched on paper
  • be kind to yourself that it doesn’t have to be perfect
  • carve out the time…yes, we know you’re busy, but if it’s that important you’ll make the time
  • when the moment comes to work on your thang turn off all devices. You heard me right, no pings, beeps, rings or vibrations and keep your phone in the other room where you can’t hear it…mom will be fine
  • stick to it for a committed amount of time….‘I’m gonna work on this for one hour every Monday and Thursday’ sorta thing
  • don’t listen to the negative nellies in the corner of your head that creep up, you can do this!
  • revel in the mini accomplishments
  • reward yourself when you’re done!

Completing a project can be both satisfying and a relief. You marked something off your someday project list and did it! Yay you!

Weather the Seasons
As we head into Fall and Winter months Bound to be Creative will be making more “maybe someday” sweatshirt dresses like the one below. Do you have a favorite sweatshirt? Me too….but the binding on some of my favorites are just too much for me, they tug, pull and are so uncomfortable. See how I transformed a too-bind-y sweat shirt into a new favorite sweatshirt-dress.

Bound to be Creative dresses with upcycled t-shirts

The bindings on this sweatshirt were too bind-y …so off they went. Notice how I kept the pockets. This fall I’ll pair it with navy leggings.

Dresses and totes will be available in the new shop and online soon! Shop the other handmade crossbody totes I make here.

New Shop photos update- Things are coming along super great – stay tuned for more details! Read about the new shop space right here.

Until next time….

Bound to be….cheering you on!

All my children are home for the summer and there’s been interesting conversation around our kitchen table. A lot of history-in-the-making chatter as I call it – some deep discussions that lead to respectful arguing and some not. There’s not only laughter that surrounds our conversation but also moments of silence that often win the battle.

Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.

Your Own Rewards Program
Do you ever simply just pat yourself on the back for a job done? Rewarding yourself even just a little bit can brighten a day. Who said you had to wait for someone to say “good job!” Nope. Giving ourselves permission of awesomeness is okay. My personal reward program consists of sitting on my front porch sipping a glass of wine thinking about nada, nothing, zilch. You know all those stores that ask at the checkout counter, “Are you a rewards member here?” Now you can say with confidence, “No, I have my own program.”

We should learn to take genuine pride in a job well done and not expect praise for one simply carried out.

Self Care Bike Break
As the ol’ saying goes “it’s like riding a bike”. Taking a self-care break is not as easy as getting back on a bike. It takes practice! Sometimes they can be mini-breaks or big breaks. These breaks can be taken anytime, anywhere for any reason! My most recent “big” self care break took my husband and I to Decorah, Iowa as we biked the 12 mile Trout Run Trail through the country side. Note: helmet is on order and this handmade reversible visor is available in my online shop in your color choices.

Don’t forget about dad!

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21

Thanks for hanging out with me! Until next time, keep smiling under all those masks!

Shelly

Whether we pour our heart and souls into something or not, we still may need to sort things out and get to the heart of the matter. In comes the forsythia branch – maybe she can shed some light on the subject and we can flourish in a new perspective. But first…remember that bread recipe I promised?…not sure if you’ll “knead” it as much as I do, but none-the-less it’s delish.

Rise to the Occasion
When given the opportunity to take it or leave it, how do we know what to take and what to leave? Do we weigh out all the options until the cows come home or simply take the plunge and regret later? The occasion in and of itself could be a rather small matter or very monumental – but size aside we can dig as deep as we want and perhaps still not come up with an answer.

The Heart of the Matter

If you knead it will they come?
This is a recipe I have used for quite a few years and still do today. It makes the most delicious sweet(ish) bread and makes for great cinnamon rolls as well. Toast it in your toaster and kids will never want store bought bread again! After years of doing this all strictly by hand I switched to using my counter top mixer saving time and sweat. Hope you enjoy it as much as my family does.

Amish White Bread (taken from allrecipes.com)
Ingredients:
2 cups warm water *about room temperature*
2/3 cups white sugar
1-1/2 tablespoons active drive yeast
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
6 cups flour (I prefer unbleached instead of bread flour)

Directions:
1. In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water and then stir in yeast. Let yeast poof into a creamy foam (can take up to 1/2 hour or less).
2. Whisk salt and oil into the yeast mixture. Mix in flour one cup at a time using your bread dough hook. Put your heart into it and knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and spongy (lightly squeeze it like a ball and it should bounce back). Place in a oiled bowl (I use the same bowl), cover with a damp cloth with a plate on it and allow to rise until doubled in bulk, usually about 1-2 hours.
3. Punch down dough – yes, just as it says “punch it” as if to deflate a soft toy ball. Knead it 26-30 times in a lightly floured surface and divide in half. Shape into loaves and place into two well oiled 9×5 inch loaf pans. Allow to rise for 30-45 minutes or until dough has risen 1 inch above pans. Could take longer depending on the temperature of your home. Slow rise is better than no rise.
4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes.
5. Enjoy the sweetness of this bread while it tickles your taste buds. Be sure to turn your oven fan on to make your neighbors jealous of the smell
6. Deliver a loaf to your neighbor 🙂

I’m a visual person and I honestly wish I had a photo of this bread for you, but quite frankly I’m not a recipe blogger so I’ll leave that to the professionals. Trust your gut and taste buds…it’ll be delish.

bound to be creative

Just add water
Sick kids for five days straight not only had me scaling the walls but grasping at the thought of playing outside in the snow, but instead of climbing the walls I put on my boots and headed outside – alone. While scouring the yard and breathing in the fresh winter air, I clipped some forsythia branches, brought them inside, arranged them in a vase filled with water and fussed for a bit of where to place such an otherwise awkward arrangement. After deciding to place on the dining table I admired the left over leaves clinging to the thin branches and walked away knowing they would leaf out and extend their beautiful display of yellows with patience in a matter of days. Besides having fresh winter interest in the house I do have a point….

From something that was otherwise very familiar to her surroundings was taken out of her comfortable element, given a thirsty drink of water and began to bloom in her new environment.

Life can be full of endless decision making and sometimes our journey can take us to places yet unknown or even lead us to where we always knew we longed to be. If we put our heart into the matter of things, can we ever go wrong?

bound to be creative hats

It only took a week and the forsythia went into full bloom and cheered us on in her journey. I’m here to do the same for you, whether your journey is leading your heart to unfamiliar places or to places that are just what you imagined them to be – I encourage you to bloom wherever you are planted and don’t be afraid to give yourself a “drink of water” to get yourself to bloom again.

how to be a hat person

Welcome! So, I totally get it…plain and simple you want to wear hats but don’t know where to begin. Hello, my name is Shelly and I love wearing hats so much that I began to make them years ago because I could never get one to fit right. I’m here to help you be the hat person you want to be.

Do you often hear these negative voices about wearing hats…..?

My head is WAY too big.

– says retired woman that wants to show up her friends at book club

I LOVE them but they look ridiculous on me, ugh.

– says the taxi mom with peanut butter stains from feeding her 3 year old lunch

My friend is always wearing a cute cap, I could never pull it off!

– says the best friend that wants to be as confident as her hat-wearing friend

As your hat wearing expert, I get the pleasure of telling you that YES! you actually can wear hats. With just a few basic tricks not only will you find a flattering, well-fitting hat but you’ll also experience the extraordinary wardrobe up-leveling that comes with incorporating hats into your wardrobe.

And I am prepared to uncover everything you need to know in my FREE mini email course!

Life is busy, especially during this time of your life and as a mom of five myself, I too, struggled with wanting to feel put together after a full day of chasing kids, feeding the 5000, etc.

Let’s start with a simple question today:

Why do I want to add hats to my everyday wardrobe?

I got the answer hidden right here….

1. Handmade hats pulls together an outfit and makes YOU look put together
2. Disguises a bad hair day, because we all know that your hair may (or may not) have gotten washed this morning…or last night
3. Instant confidence after a crappy day at work
4. A shield from the world when you just wanna get your mail and go home

Join me and hundred’s of other women that learned how to beat the confidence battle while accessorizing with a hat!

Bound to be….helping you, too,
XO Shelly
