Summer is in full swing here at Bound to be Creative® and I wanted to share some easy breezy tips on how to protect your face from the sun.
Pass the Baby Oil…who?
I’m fair-skinned and blond-ish gal. Growing up I was envious of the “girl next door” who could get a tan in half a minute (ahem…my sister). As a big-boned zit-faced teenager, I had no idea how or even why I needed to take care of my skin.
A little back story before we begin. Back in the 80’s we slathered on the baby oil and sprawled out on the south side of the house and basically let the sun bake us. Yep, I’m a child of the 80’s.
Years later, a nasty scar (thanks doc) from a bad mole removal, my father’s melanoma diagnosis and the beginning of sun spots on my face, I’m way smarter than that zit-faced teenager.
First, seems like a no brainer…sunscreen
I use sunscreen on my face, neck and that nasty scar. Ater years of trying many sunscreens I finally found one that works. Nuetrogena® Clear Face SPF 30 is a little bottle of miracle. I love that it’s lightweight, non-greasy and easy to apply. It’s just enough to give me some color on the cheekbones for summer. Full disclosure is that this fair skin gal likes a bit of summer sun kiss.

Next, take it under the willow tree
After sewing hats for a few hours it’s nice to take the office outdoors! At our home we have trees big enough to offer up oodles of shade. Sitting under the big willow is nothing short of childhood summer warm fuzzies in the country! Not gonna lie, I really wanted to sit in the sun on this particular day, simply put the willow tree shade was more comfortable and a smarter choice. Don’t get me wrong, I get plenty of Vitamin D, just ask my freckles and remember that baby oil?…yeah.

Third, timing is everything
Are you one that loves to be outside to garden, mow lawn, bike, hike and run? Same. Getting outdoors is great to stay active as you hoe the garden or get your walk in maybe is best in the early mornings or evenings. It’s simply cooler and a wiser choice to protect your face from the sun.

Fourth, throw some shade this summer with hats
Another way to protect your face from the sun is to cover up with headwear as you head out the door. It seems like a no-brainer, however making a conscious effort to cover up is key. Keeping my lightweight sun visor or fun bucket hat next to the door is not only a good reminder but it’s also at the ready when I need it.
Let’s recap:
- sunscreen for your face, neck and wherever else
- seek shade under a tree
- get outdoors during non-peek sunlight hours
- wear sun visors or bucket hats
Protecting you face from the sun doesn’t have to be complicated. In conclusion, with a few simple actionable steps your face will be as healthy as it was when you were a teenager.
